Workshop Experience

  • She designed a popular workshop series, Foundations in Teaching, focused on principles of intentional course design, which she has offered in various formats to faculty and graduate students on many campuses. 
  • At NC State she led a campus-wide inquiry-guided learning initiative, working with numerous faculty and departments to incorporate inquiry-guided learning into courses and curricula. Her book, Teaching and Learning through Inquiry, documents many aspects of this initiative.
  • Virginia has led workshops at campuses around the country on a variety of topics, including:
    • intentional course and curriculum design,
    • outcomes-based assessment,
    • inquiry-guided learning, and
    • teaching in intensive course formats.

Other General Information

  • In 2000 she received the Creative and Innovative Program Award of Merit for an Administrative Program by the National Association of Summer School Deans for a seminar she designed on teaching in intensive course formats.
  • Edited by Virginia with contributions from 37 NCSU faculty and staff, Teaching and Learning through Inquiry: A Guidebook for Institutions and Instructors (2004: Stylus), describes many aspects of the inquiry-guided learning initiative at NC State.
  • As a faculty member at both NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill, she taught a three-credit course on college teaching in which she guided hundreds of graduate students in designing post-secondary courses of their choosing.
  • She holds a Ph.D. (Educational Psychology), UNC-Chapel Hill; MBA, Stern School, New York University; and B.A. cum laude (English Literature), Smith College.
