Background in Faculty Development
Barbara has served as:
- Director of The TEAM Center at the University of Texas at San Antonio (2008-Present)
- Director of the Excellence in Teaching Program at the University of Nevada at Reno (2004-2008)
- The former Director of Faculty Development at the US Air Force Academy (USAFA) (1995- 2004)
- University of Maryland, University College (1978-1995)
She is currently a member of the Core Committee for the POD Network [Professional and Organizational Development] in Higher Education, the largest professional association for faculty development in the United States.
Workshop Experience
- She frequently offers workshops at professional conferences (Lilly “Original” and three Lilly Regional Teaching Conferences, The Teaching Professor Conferences, etc.) and for over 400 colleges and universities.
- She has facilitated two-and-half-day course redesign retreats for two university systems, the University of Missouri System (twice) and the Nevada System of Higher Education (ongoing).
- Her workshops are on varied topics, including:
- cooperative learning,
- the teaching portfolio,
- classroom assessment/research,
- critical thinking,
- writing across the curriculum,
- classroom observations and
- course design
Other General Information
- She has published articles and books on a variety of faculty development topics such as cooperative learning, peer classroom observations (she was a FIPSE Project Director on that topic), the teaching portfolio, microteaching, syllabus construction, classroom assessment/research, critical thinking, focus groups, writing across the curriculum, academic games, and course redesign.
- One of her major publications is: Cooperative Learning for Higher Education Faculty (Oryx Press, 1998).
- She is currently under contract to revise The Course Syllabus: A Learning-Centered Approach.
- While at USAFA, Barbara won both a teaching award and a research award.
- After the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) selected the Air Force Academy as a Leadership Institution in Undergraduate Education in 2001, she began serving as the liaison to the AAC&U's Greater Expectations Consortium on Quality Education.
- In 2002 Barbara loved being a Visiting Scholar at Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand.
- She received her Ph.D. in English literature from Florida State University.
