"Designing Your Courses for Greater Student Engagement and Better Student Learning"
Dee Fink & Associates is offering our 8th Annual National Workshop on Integrated Course Design in Chicago, IL on May 25-27, 2016.
We are again including the option this year: a half-day workshop at the end of the main workshop, on "Leading Your Own Workshop on Integrated Course Design."
We have been offering successful campus versions of this workshop for several years. But the Annual National Workshop is especially powerful for two reasons:
- More Time: We have 2 ½ days.
- More Feedback: Each participant receives individualized feedback from Feedback Facilitator in each step of the design process.
This workshop will give college teachers from any campus the opportunity to learn about these ideas, apply them to one of their own courses, and receive feedback on their new course design. This is a "Doing" workshop, NOT a "talking heads" seminar. Participants will spend over 50% of the workshop time "doing" course design: re-designing their courses, sharing their design with others, and getting feedback on their design.
Purpose and Value of this Workshop
In 2003, Fink published a book, Creating Significant Learning Experiences, which laid out a novel way of designing courses so that students have powerful, significant learning experiences. People who have attended previous workshops have made comments such as the following:

People attending this workshop will learn how to use these ideas to design or redesign their courses so that their students have learning experiences that take into account five phases of course design: situational factors, learning goals, feedback and assessment, teaching/learning activities, and careful integration. Workshop leaders will guide participants through all the key steps of this process. Working with a specific course, participants will frame learning goals, incorporate evaluation and assessment, and formulate powerful, active teaching strategies.
Option: "Leading Your Own Workshop" Again this year, at the end of the main 2.5 day workshop, we will offer a half-day workshop for people who want additional help on preparing and leading a workshop on Integrated Course Design for other people. In this workshop, we will:
- Share and discuss:
- Our workshop outline.
- What makes a course design workshop "a good workshop"?
- Identify the key components and activities.
- Discuss the challenge of and identify strategies for "making this your own workshop".
- Share our PowerPoint slides and other workshop materials with all participants.
When: We will hold this workshop on Friday afternoon, 1:30 - 4:30 pm, after the conclusion of the main workshop.
Cost: The registration for this workshop is $150.00 per person.
In addition to applying each of the key steps of Integrated Course Design to their own courses, participants will receive individualized feedback on their design. The general agenda for the workshop will be:

Location and Hotel
This year we are trying a new venue. Loyola University of Chicago [LUC] has arranged for us to use their Water Tower Campus for our Workshop; this is on the near north side of downtown Chicago. Participants can get here from the O'Hare or Midway Airports (a) by taxi or (b) by using the "L". The "L" has stops at both airports; in both cases, you will transfer once, in the downtown Loop, to get to the Water Tower Campus. This is ON the "Magnificent Mile" of Michigan Avenue, which also means it is near the lake, numerous shops, museums, restaurants, theaters, etc.
Participants can stay at any hotel they wish. But the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower, located one block north of the Water Tower Campus, has set aside 35 rooms for workshop participants at a reduced rate of $245 (plus taxes) a night. These rates are guaranteed until May 3rd. Guests may also make reservations for rooms two nights before or after the Workshop at these same rates, provided rooms are available.

The registration fee for attending this workshop is:
- On or Before May 7, 2016: $650.00 per person.
- After May 7, 2016: $750.00 per person.

Quantity Discount: Any institution sending four or more participants to the Chicago workshop will receive a major discount of 20% per person: Cost = $600 per person / $520 per person (On or Before May 7, 2016)
Graduate Student Discount: We are also giving a significant discount to graduate students who attend. Cost = $425 per person.
